2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)

An interesting concept goes off the rails – feels like 2020.

Not that there isn’t already enough source material to stoke the fires of racial tension at the moment, if the writers wanted to drench us in a sea of wokeness, they could have at least done it with some style (e.g. Get Out)!

Initially engaging and intriguing, at one point I was admiring the cleverness of the idea. But it’s just a big letdown from then on. At one point it even veers off into chick-flick territory. It’s not just that the premise of Antebellum is suspiciously similar to another thriller, not mentioned for spoiler reasons (ask me if you’re curious). You know the film’s in trouble when you start thinking “oh, cooome on…” In spite of this, Janelle Monáe does a great job in her role, with what she has to work with.

Antebellum premieres in Sweden on 25 September.
