3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)

Better than it looks.

When I saw the trailer for Hostiles, I got the impression it might be a bit pretentious and boring; I really only made an effort to see it because of Christian Bale. But I was pleasantly surprised. It’s actually a movie’s movie! Albeit with some slow and drawn-out dialogue parts thrown in.

Captain Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) has been forced by his superior, Colonel Abraham Biggs (Stephen Lang) to command a crew to escort a captured Native American Indian chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to their land. On their way they come across a traumatised Rosalie Quaid (Rosamund Pike), who joins them on their journey.

As usual, Bale delivers on the acting front – what a talent! Rosamund Pike also does a great job in her supporting role.

Apart from Bale’s acting, there wasn’t much that really ‘grabbed’ me about Hostiles, so I have rated it accordingly. Hostiles has a bit of a Revenant-y vibe, despite being set 70 years later in 1892. I felt similar towards The Revenant – so if you loved that, this is really a must-see for you.

Hostiles premieres in Sweden on 9 March.
