Interesting-ish
How has the work of David Lynch taken inspiration from classic film The Wizard of Oz? This documentary grapples with that question, as six film buffs (five directors and one critic) give their five cents on the topic.
Each of the contributors has their own segment in which they explore a particular parallel, and they do this through commentary, speculations and references to other films. Sometimes very insightful and clever observations, other times clutching at straws.
As this is a particularly niche subject, there are only so many comparisons that can be made. In terms of getting to the point, it could have done without many of the other film references, which weren’t particularly relevant. In some cases it felt like the directors were tooting their own horn by referencing their own work in there as well.
As a fan of both David Lynch and The Wizard of Oz this should have been right up my alley, but it feels too drawn out for a film-length documentary.
Lynch/Oz is showing at the Stockholm Film Festival and premiered 10 November.
